I seem to do a lot of moving.

Fortunately, this time I am moving my folks and not myself.

My 85 year old mom and 97 year old step-dad are moving from Florida up to Chicago to be near little old me. And of course my darling husband and fabulous sister-in-law, too.

I’ve been in Florida for almost a week with about another week to go until moving day. My brother arrived a few days after me and fabulous sister-in-law comes in today for reinforcements.

We are making great progress.

Florida moving

Many of the boxes are ones that mom collected on trips to her favorite wine and spirits shop.

The folks have complimented me on my efficiency and organization.

“You should get a job helping people move!”

I told them that I only do this for people I love. And besides, strangers would not find my bossiness quite so endearing.

Although the folks have been in this home for 29 years, they have done an excellent job of  keeping things neat and tidy. No scary I-have-no-idea-what’s-in-there closet or jumbo junk drawers for them.

We have had a blast looking through old family mementos and photographs.

My favorite is this photo of our beautiful mom on the day of her wedding to our dad, circa 1953.

mom's wedding dressGorgeous, right?

We have so many great memories of visiting the folks here in Florida over the years. Now it is time to say farewell to this cozy home

and move onto more fun and adventure in Chicago.

They are ready!

I heart Chicago

  2. I was wondering where you have been! I thought that maybe you were in hiding writing your expose about blog conferences. Sounds like things are going smoothly! Good luck!

    • Hahaha! That’s a tale for another day…or perhaps never. 😉 I’m hoping to be back into the blog world by late next week. Fingers crossed! Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. Ahhh . . . when brides knew how to dress! Beautiful.

What a joy for your parents to be coming closer to you! Have them scoop up a handful of hot Florida sand to hold onto while they stare at the pretty white snow this coming winter! They’ll have such a good time doing all the fabulous things with you that Chicago has to offer. Good luck with the move!

  5. That IS a beautiful photo of a beautiful bride! It’s neat to catch a glimpse into your family life and see how your mom and you share a love of good wine. And tidiness! I fear my husband and I are starting to hoard in our basement. I really need to throw or give some stuff away!

    • I’m telling you, their tidiness was the biggest gift EVER! We did not have to sort through and force them to part with prized possessions in order to fit into their new place. Phew!!!!

  6. Wow – from Florida to Chicago will be a big change – but the warmth of family will be so sweet. And your mother looks like a royal princess. Beautiful.

  7. You are a good daughter, Mo. Sometimes I wish that my parents would have retired, downsized and moved south, because that step would have involved a lot of purging. Good heavens, a mountain of junk can accumulate in a house in 62 years (sigh).

  8. Such a positive take on the move, Mo. Both on your part and your folks. Love that. And the best part? Knowing that fabulous adventures await up in Chicago. Bring ’em on!

Your parents are so lucky to have you to help. So much moving in one year! Hope the rest of the move goes smoothly.

  11. Mo, what a gorgeous bride your mother was! I’m with you — couldn’t pay me to help someone move, just do it for those I love. How nice that there were no scary closets! When I helped my parents move after my father retired, it was a nightmare! My mother was a packrat and didn’t want to part with anything — not even an electric bill from 30 years (and 4 houses) ago! 😀

    • Oh, I feel your pain, Jean! My mother’s brother (a life long bachelor and packrat) passed away a few years ago and I helped clean out his place. Among the things we found were packets of sweet ‘n low and Wendy’s napkins that were still packed in boxes from when he moved down to Florida from NY upon retirement.

  13. Good luck on the move! I have lots of those scary closets / drawers….and a room too. Not good! I think I need to work on that! Anyway…it’s so nice that they will be closer to you! We live next door to my mother in law and it is wonderful. And those old family photos are such a treasure!
